Our Ensembles

MYSP is comprised of 3 performing orchestras and 2 wind ensembles which hold open auditions each spring for the following season.

Auditions for the 2020-2021 season will be held May 27, 2020 for instruments in all ensembles. 

Youth Symphony

Kalena Bovell, conductor

Full orchestra: strings, winds, brass, percussion, harp 

 

•Advanced experience level

•Performs standard orchestral repertoire

•Ages 13-18 approximately

•Four concerts per season, including a possible Side-by-Side concert or rehearsal with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra.

•Annual Concerto Competition - winners featured as soloists on the winter concert

•Rehearses Sundays September-May

 

String Orchestra

Long Long Kang, conductor

All string instruments - violin, viola, cello, bass

•Training group for Youth Symphony

•Intermediate to advanced experience level

•Performs standard string orchestra repertoire and     reductions of orchestral literature

•Ages 12-18 approximately

•Four concerts per season

•Rehearses Tuesday evenings September-May

Prelude Strings

Chelsea Subick, conductor

All string instruments -- violin, viola, cello, bass

 

•Training group for String Orchestra

•Intermediate experience level

•Performs upper middle school level orchestral repertoire

•Ages 10-16 approximately

•Four concerts per season

•Rehearses Tuesday evenings September-May

 
 

Wind Ensemble (WE)

•Full wind ensemble:  Woodwind, Brass & Percussion   instruments

•Advanced experience level: Grades 8+

•3 concerts per season

•Rehearsals begin after Nov 1, 2020; Day/time TBD

Concert Band (CB)

•Woodwind, Brass & Percussion   instruments

•Beginner-Intermediate experience level: Grades 7+ with at 

 least 2 years experience

•3 concerts per season

•Rehearsals begin after Nov 1, 2020; Day/time TBD

The MYSP staff is currently working on creative and flexible plans for the 2020-2021 season given the current pandemic.
